What do podcast guesting results actually look like?

If you’ve been told that appearing on a few podcasts will bring in a flood of leads and immediate sales, I want to offer a more honest picture. Because the truth is, podcast guesting works—it just doesn’t always work on the timeline people expect. And if you’re measuring the wrong things, you’ll quit right before the compounding kicks in 🌱

Samantha Mabe has been a podcast guest since 2017. She knows what it feels like to walk into an interview with confidence, handle unexpected questions, and walk away knowing she showed up well. When she booked a No-Fuss Podcast Tour™, she wasn’t nervous. But she did have things to learn—and what happened after her tour is a perfect example of what sustainable podcast guesting actually looks like in practice… and some podcast interview tips to help with your next recording!

Meet Samantha: a podcast guest since before it was cool 😉

Samantha is the founder of Lemon and the Sea, a web design studio that helps health and wellness practitioners launch and refresh their websites. She’s been hosting and guesting on podcasts since 2017—which means she came into her No-Fuss Podcast Tour with something many guests don’t have right away: being comfortable recording with podcast hosts

The challenge wasn’t the podcast interviews; it was finding the right shows

What Samantha didn’t have was a clear path to the podcasts that would actually matter for her business. She had recently niched down into serving health and wellness practitioners, and the network of podcast hosts she’d built over the years skewed toward creative entrepreneurs and small business owners—not the health and wellness space she now needed to reach 😬

“Before, I knew lots of podcast hosts who were like targeting creative entrepreneurs and small businesses, so it was really easy to reach out to those people,” she shared in our Speaker Success Stories episode. “And so when I started trying to find people in this specific industry, I was like, trying to go on my podcast player and type the stuff in, and it was a lot harder”

Finding the right podcasts—ones that talked about business within the health and wellness world, rather than just the wellness topics themselves—required a level of targeted research that felt like starting from scratch. That’s where her No-Fuss Podcast Tour came in!

The podcast interview that opened doors for Samantha

One of Samantha’s tour appearances was on The Practice of the Practice, a well-established podcast in her niche with a large audience of health and wellness practitioners. It was exactly the kind of show she’d been trying to find and book on her own

The interview went smoothly. Samantha had submitted suggested questions in advance (a move we always recommend and include in the pitch emails we write for No-Fuss Podcast Tour clients—but more on that in a minute 😉), and while the host added their own as the conversation evolved, the core topics stayed in the lane Samantha wanted to be in. She showed up prepared, stayed conversational, and delivered real value for the audience

Why her freebie converted better than a typical opt-in

After the episode aired, Samantha saw something most guests don’t talk about: her freebie actually converted. Not because it was a flashy PDF or a quick download—but because it was a website review

“It’s not as simple as a PDF opt-in. Like, I actually have to review their website, but it converts much better and I enjoy doing them”
—Samantha Mabe

This is a podcast interview tip that doesn’t get nearly enough credit: your freebie matters as much as the interview itself. A high-touch offer—something that requires real interaction—signals credibility and creates a genuine connection with the listener. It’s harder to fulfill, sure… but it’s also harder to ignore! 🙌

Why podcast interview results aren’t always immediate—and why that’s okay

Here’s where Samantha’s story is super helpful if you’ve ever guested on a show and then wondered why your inbox wasn’t flooded with client inquiries or your email list didn’t suddenly explode 😅

“With websites, it’s kind of a longer turnaround to an actual client. So even though I’ve done a website review now and I’ve been on the podcast now, I may not see those people turn into clients for a couple of months”
—Samantha Mabe

She saw Instagram follows from listeners after the episode. She saw website review bookings (that freebie we just talked about). What she didn’t see was an immediate surge of paid clients—and she was totally at peace with that, because she knows how her business works 🤷‍♀️ The clients will come as those website audits get delivered… and she told me a few months after we recorded her Speaker Success Stories episode that they did!

The podcast interview tip most people skip: measure introductions, not instant sales

The mistake a lot of people make is treating podcast guesting like a direct response ad. They expect a booking link in the show notes to translate into clients within a week. But podcast guesting is a long-lasting visibility strategy, not a flash sale. What you’re doing is getting introduced to a new audience—people who now know your name, have heard your voice, and understand what you do

That introduction plants a seed. Some seeds grow fast; others take a season to sprout. The ones that take longer are often the most valuable, too, because by the time that person is ready to hire someone, they’ve been quietly nurturing a sense of trust in you for months 🌱

Samantha already knew this about her business. If you’re newer to guesting, now you do too 😊

A podcast guesting benefit no one’s talking about: referral partners 🤝

“Most of the time what I find when I podcast guest for people, especially in the industry that I’m working in, is those people also become referral partners”
—Samantha Mabe

This is one of the most undervalued outcomes of a podcast tour, and it was front and center in Samantha’s experience from her No-Fuss Podcast Tour! One of her best referral partners started out as a podcast host who had Samantha as a guest on her show. Since then, they’ve collaborated on a retreat together, regularly share each other’s content, and refer work back and forth 🎉 It’s the kind of relationship that quietly keeps a business like Samantha’s (or yours!) healthy for years to come

How podcast relationships make you a better resource for your own audience

There’s another piece here that Samantha touched on: when you’ve been on someone’s podcast, you know and trust their work in a way that a Google search can’t replicate. That means when someone in your community needs something you don’t offer, you can refer with confidence—not just send them to whoever came up in a search 😜

“It’s also a really good place for me when I’m looking for people to share with my audience… I already kind of know and trust what they do because we’ve spoken”
—Samantha Mabe

That’s the kind of visibility that converts—not just for you, but for the people around you 💚

What the No-Fuss Podcast Tour™ actually changed for Samantha

Samantha came in with previous guest podcasting experience. She didn’t need a ton of help with her podcast interview tips or how to handle herself on-mic. What she needed was a curated starting point in a niche she was still finding her feet in

“Having a bunch of places to start was really helpful, and then kind of using that as a place to go, okay, these are the types of things that I can be looking for, and finding related stuff makes it a lot easier for me to continue to reach out to podcasts”
—Samantha Mabe

This is the part of a podcast tour that’s easy to underestimate if you’ve never tried to find shows in a specific industry before. I’m not just giving you a list of podcasts—I’m giving you a framework for visibility success. Once you know what the right shows look like, you can find more of them. Once you have a bank of ready-to-send pitch emails, you can keep pitching without starting from scratch every time!

Samantha’s podcast interview tips for anyone still on the fence about podcast guesting

Here’s what she’d tell you if you’re hesitating about being a podcast guest:

You don’t need fancy equipment to nail a podcast interview

“You just have to have a quiet place to record in and a decent-ish microphone”

That’s it! A USB microphone and a closet full of clothes will get you further than you think. Don’t let gear be the excuse 🙏

Hosts edit; imperfection is part of the process!

One of the most common fears around podcast interviews is sounding unprofessional. But almost every experienced host edits their episodes to at least some extent. If your dog has a fit because the UPS guy is out to get you, they can cut it out. If you stumble over a sentence, they can retake it. If you need to re-start an answer, just say so—they’ll fix it in post!

“It’s okay if it’s not perfect… podcast hosts know to expect those sorts of things and will make time to edit them out”

And if you’re ever unsure? Just ask: “Can we edit that out?” The answer is almost always yes!

It’s okay to say “I don’t know” in a podcast interview

Getting a question you don’t know the answer to feels terrifying in theory. In practice, it almost never matters 🙃

“Most of the time, you know enough about your stuff to give some sort of an answer. And it’s also okay to say, ‘I don’t actually know that much about this particular topic…'”

Especially when it comes to trending topics or things outside your core area—saying “I’d need to look into that more before I could give an informed opinion” isn’t a weakness… it actually creates credibility with the podcast host and audience 🤔

Use client examples when podcast interview questions get specific

When a question pushes you toward territory that feels uncertain, pivot to a story. A real client example—what they came to you with, what you did, what changed—is always more compelling than a general answer anyway. It grounds the conversation in something tangible and reminds you (and the listeners) that you’ve actually done this work and gotten results for people!

Keep a master doc so podcast admin doesn’t slow you down

This one came up almost as an aside, but it’s also one of the most practical podcast interview tips Samantha shared:

“I also have a document that lives on my computer with all of my links and my bio and like, basically all the questions somebody asks when they say, okay, fill out this form so you can get scheduled. I just copy and paste it”

If you’re doing any volume of podcast guesting (or want to), a Visibility Ecosystem Hub™ that keeps your bio, headshot link, social handles, freebie URLs, and suggested questions all in one place will save you more time than you’d expect. It also means nothing falls through the cracks while a booking is sitting in your inbox waiting for you to dig up your one-sheet 😌

The real podcast guesting results? They compound…

Samantha’s No-Fuss Podcast Tour didn’t create some sort of crazy overnight success. What it did give her was something longer-lasting: introductions to the right audiences, a website review freebie that will keep converting (even long after the episode aired), a new referral partner who’s now a genuine collaborator, and a clearer framework for finding the right shows going forward

That’s what sustainable podcast guesting looks like. It’s not a spike; it’s a slow, steady build that pays dividends long after the episode stops being fresh news
