Podcast Guesting Strategies for 90-Day Visibility Growth

What if you walked into your hair salon, sat down in the chair, and your stylist asks what you want today. And you go, “I don’t know… just do something fun?”

No reference photo to show them. No notes like, “I’m growing out my bangs” or “I need it short enough to feel fresh but long enough to pull back.” No context, just… viiiiibes 🫠

You’re going to walk out with a haircut, sure. You might even like it! But you also shouldn’t be shocked if it doesn’t feel like you, because you never explained what “fun” meant in the first place 😅

That’s what a lot of podcast guesting strategies look like when the audience, topic, and angle aren’t clear. Pitching starts to feel random. Follow-ups slip through the cracks. The episode comes out… and then it does absolutely nothing for your business

If you’ve done a handful of podcast interviews and heard crickets afterward, I want you to hear this part clearly: that does not automatically mean podcast guesting doesn’t work

Most of the time, it means your podcast guesting strategies were missing one of the pieces that actually turns an interview into momentum. Not because you’re bad at being a guest, or because you “said the wrong thing,” but because the behind-the-scenes setup matters way more than most people realize 🤷‍♀️

Usually, the gap comes down to one of three things: clarity (so you’re showing up in the right rooms with the right message), systems (so opportunities don’t get lost in the shuffle), or follow-through (so the episode keeps working for you after it goes live). And the good news is, all three are fixable—without you hustling harder or turning podcast pitching into a second job 🙃

“Nothing happened” doesn’t always mean “podcast guesting failed”

Before we get into what went wrong, I want to slow down for a second and talk about expectations, because podcast guesting isn’t a light switch you can flip on or off

It’s more like planting a little garden in your Visibility Ecosystem. You put seeds in the ground, you water them, you give them light… and then you wait a bit. Because that’s just how growth works 🌱

A lot of people expect something to happen the split second an episode airs. Sometimes it does! You might see a quick spike in traffic, a few new subscribers, maybe even a DM or two

But it’s also extremely normal for there to be some lag time

Between recording and the episode airing, there’s often a long delay, sometimes months. And even after it’s live, results can show up later: because someone shared the episode again, or a listener found it while bingeing the backlog, or your name popped up in their world for the third time and it finally clicked 🧠

Also, one episode usually doesn’t move the needle

Trust tends to compound and then ‘overnight,’ shoot up, like a plant. The real magic of podcast guesting strategies is that they start working better when people hear you in multiple places and think, “Wait… I feel like I’m seeing you everywhere” 🙌 That’s the kind of Everywhere Effect™ that we’re trying to create here!!

Now let’s talk about why “nothing happened” happens, because it’s usually not about how you did on the mic

Where most podcast guesting strategies quietly go sideways

Gotta be honest here: you can be a great guest, have a great conversation… and still get zero measurable results if the strategy around it is a wee bit fuzzy

Sometimes “fuzzy” looks like being busy, doing the best you can, and assuming the results will naturally follow

Most of the time, the leak shows up in one of three places: clarity, systems, or follow-through

Let’s walk through those in a way that actually helps you diagnose what happened, instead of just making you feel like you should’ve known better

1) You had the visibility… but not the clarity

I don’t mean clarity like “I help online business owners” or “I talk about mindset.” I mean clarity that helps you get on the right shows, have a conversation people remember, and be associated with something specific afterward (preferably your paid offer 😉)

If your message is broad, your results will be broad too—which usually looks like… well, nothin’

The first layer is audience clarity

If you’re not sure who you’re trying to reach through podcast guesting, you’ll end up on shows that aren’t a fit, even if the host is lovely and the interview feels good in the moment. “Entrepreneurs” is too wide. “Women” is too wide. Even “course creators” can be wildly different depending on stage, offer type, and what they’re focused on right now

The second layer is topic clarity

What do you want to be known for speaking about? What do you want someone to repeat when they recommend you to a friend?

A lot of podcast guesting strategies fail here because people pick topics that feel “safe,” not topics that make them clearly go, “oh, that’s her thing!”

The third layer is angle clarity

Topics are general. Angles are what create curiosity

Angle clarity is the difference between “Yep, I’ve heard that” and “Wait… I haven’t thought about it like that”

If your angle could be delivered by ten different guests, it’s harder for anyone to remember you as the person for it later 🤦‍♀️

2) You didn’t have a system, so the whole bucket leaked

Even with great clarity, podcast guesting can quietly fail if you don’t have a reliable way to track what’s happening

And I know “systems” can sound like I’m about to tell you to build a 14-tab spreadsheet with color-coded formulas and an automation that texts you when it’s time to follow up 🙃 (Which, I mean, I love me a good Airtable base, but… that could be too much)

But if your podcast guesting strategies rely on your memory (or your inbox search bar), you’re going to drop balls without meaning to 😬

You’ll forget who you pitched. You’ll lose email conversations. You won’t follow up when you planned to. You won’t remember which shows said yes but never sent a booking link. And when that’s happening, podcast guesting starts feeling like a lot of effort for not much return

This is one of the biggest reasons people decide podcast guesting “doesn’t work,” when what’s actually happening is that their process has holes in it!

The most sustainable podcast guesting strategies make it easy to answer, at any moment, “What’s next?” without having to mentally reconstruct your entire outreach history

3) You treated that episode like the finish line

Podcast guesting strategies don’t pay off when the interview ends. (Hate to break it to ya) They pay off when the interview becomes a relationship, a referral path, and a repeatable visibility asset. There are two common places follow-through breaks down

The first is during pitching

A lot of people follow up once (or not at all) because they don’t want to bother the host. They assume silence means no. They don’t want to be annoying

What’s usually true is much less personal: people are drowning in their inbox, and your email got buried

The second is after the episode airs

Most people share the episode maybe once because they feel like they “should,” and then they move on. Meanwhile the episode is evergreen, sitting there ready to keep doing its job, but it never gets another nudge 👋

And this is where podcast guesting strategies either compound… or fade out

You’ve gotta remember that the results aren’t only in the first week after an episode airs. They can come from resharing later, linking it in future content, sending it to your list when it’s relevant again, or simply staying in the host’s world in a real way so you become someone they remember 🤝

If you’re already seeing that you’ve fallen into one of these traps, I’m teaching a workshop called the Guesting Game Plan, where we’ll diagnose which leak you’re encountering, what to adjust first, and what a 90-day reset looks like for your offer and capacity 😊 Click here to come join us!

A few misconceptions that can quietly sabotage your results

Sometimes that “nothing happened” feeling isn’t just about what you did. It’s also about what you assumed had to happen for it to count as a win

One misconception is that if you’re not getting paid to speak, it can’t be worth it

Your time is valuable, and I’m not here to tell you to do free things forever. But podcast guesting strategies often “pay” in a different currency: leads, sales, referrals, collaborations, and being top-of-mind the next time someone needs what you do

Another misconception is that you have to pitch your paid offer directly for podcast guesting to lead to clients

You don’t. In fact, when the conversation starts feeling like an ad, the trust drops fast 😭

The strongest podcast guesting strategies make the next step feel obvious and easy to choose, without pressure or awkwardness

And then there’s the spiral of “Maybe nobody listened”

I get it! This is especially tough if you didn’t see a spike in followers or subscribers. But remember that people don’t always opt in immediately. Sometimes they listen and file you away mentally. Sometimes they like you but don’t need you yet. Sometimes they skip the episode because the title didn’t catch them that day, even if the conversation inside would’ve landed perfectly

That’s why clarity and repetition matter. You’re not trying to win everyone in one episode. You’re trying to become recognizable to the right people over time

And once you see it that way, the goal shifts! It’s no longer “How do I make this one podcast interview finally do something?” It becomes, “How do I build podcast guesting strategies that actually compound—without requiring me to live inside my inbox or constantly be ‘on’?”

This isn’t some dramatic, burn-it-all-down reset, ‘k? 😉 This is the kind where you keep what’s working, stop repeating what clearly isn’t, and set yourself up so your next few interviews have an actual job to do

So instead of thinking about podcast guesting as a bunch of one-off appearances, you’re going to treat the next 90 days like a small, intentional visibility season

You’ll have one message. One audience focus. A simple way to stay consistent. AND a follow-through rhythm that makes each episode more valuable than the last 🙌

I’ll walk you through the reset here, but if you want to skip the DIY guesswork, the Guesting Game Plan workshop is where we’ll apply this in real time—so you leave knowing what you’re pitching, who you’re pitching, and what happens after the episode goes live!

The 90-day reset for podcast guesting

For most established business owners, 90 days is a sweet spot. It’s long enough for interviews to book in and the first episodes to start coming out… but it’s also short enough that you can stay focused and actually finish what you start 😌

This guest podcasting reset has three phases, and each one is meant to remove friction, not add more tasks to your plate. (I get it: I don’t want that either!)

Phase one is clarity. This is where you choose your core message for the season. We’re focused just on the thing you want to be known for right now, with a specific audience in mind

The goal is to make it easier to say YES to the right podcasts and NO to the wrong ones. I want you to make the conversation you have on the mic feel consistent enough that it sticks. When you’re repeating the same core message across multiple interviews, people start actually remembering you 🥳

Phase two is consistency without chaos. This is where you create a lightweight outreach rhythm that you can maintain, plus a way to track follow-ups so opportunities don’t slip away. When you can glance at one place and know what you pitched, who replied, and who needs a follow-up, it becomes a habit you can actually keep up with (hallelujah!)

Phase three is compounding. This is the part people skip because they figure the episode will do the work for them, right? 🤷‍♀️

In this phase, you’ll treat each interview like an evergreen asset and a relationship touchpoint. We’re not looking at podcast guesting like a one-week promotional obligation anymore, okay? You’re gonna reshare episodes in a way that makes sense for your business and you’re gonna stay connected with hosts so your visibility starts to expand through actual relationships that create results

That’s the whole reset! 😁 It’s just one focused message, steady podcast outreach you can stick to, and a follow-through system that helps you build real results

If you’re reading this thinking, “Yessssss, I need this… but I want someone to help me choose the message and make the plan feel doable,” that’s exactly what the Guesting Game Plan workshop is for 😄 We’ll turn this into your 90-day visibility season, not some generic checklist!

Choose the starting point for your podcast guesting strategy

The simplest way to choose your starting point is to look back at your last few podcast appearances and ask one question that’s… honestly, a little uncomfy sometimes 🫣

Did I decide what I wanted this interview to do before I ever recorded it?

In other words, did you go into that conversation with a clear plan for who you wanted to reach, what you wanted them to understand, and what you wanted them to actually do next?

If the answer is “ummmm, not really,” start with phase one. Without clarity, everything else is so much harder

If the answer is “yes, I did have a clear message,” but your outreach was inconsistent or your follow-ups were messy, start with phase two. Even strong podcast guesting strategies won’t produce much if the process is leaking opportunities. You can’t build momentum on a foundation of “I think I pitched them, right?” and “I’ll follow up when I remember.” Because let’s be real: you probably won’t remember 😅

And if the answer is “yes, I was clear, and I actually stayed consistent,” but you still felt like the episode came out and died on the vine… that’s phase three: compounding. That’s the follow-through piece that turns podcast guesting into a long game instead of a series of little bursts that never connect to each other!

Now, you don’t have to fix all three at once. In fact, trying to overhaul everything at the same time is one of the fastest ways to burn out and decide podcast guesting “just isn’t for you.” This works best when you work on one piece at a time, building them up to a cohesive system

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, start with the smallest lever that would create the biggest outcome for you

For most people, that’s clarity. t immediately changes how you pitch, how you speak, and how memorable you are—without requiring you to do more, more, more 😫

It also makes your next step easier to choose. Once you know who you want in front of and what you want to be known for, it becomes much easier to pick the right next step to mention at the end of an interview. And that’s what makes podcast guesting strategies quietly become profitable without turning the interview into a gross sales pitch!

A quick example for you:

Let’s say you’re an established service provider who’s trying to book more high-quality clients this quarter, but you’ve been relying on referrals and you want more consistent leads coming in

If you go on podcasts with a broad, generic topic like “how to get more clients,” it’s not going to do much for you. People have heard it before, and they’re going to tune out rather than tune in 👂

But if your angle is more specific—something like “why your visibility isn’t converting,” or “how to turn speaking opportunities into warm leads without posting every day”—you’re now talking to a very particular kind of person who sees themself and HAS to tune in!

The point of the reset isn’t “perfect.” It’s “repeatable.”

The reason I recommend 90 days as your reset timeframe is because it gives you enough space to let your podcast guesting strategies do their job

When you show up with the same core message across multiple interviews, it creates a thread people can follow. You don’t have to answer the same questions every time—that’s why we use different angles—but it helps you become known for something. It makes it easier to explain what you do for folks. AND it makes your results easier to track, because you’re no longer throwing a dozen different messages at the wall and hoping one of them sticks 🍝

So if podcast guesting hasn’t worked for you (yet), don’t see that as a dead end. Recognize it as a chance to evaluate what’s NOT working and fix it

Start here…

Pick one podcast interview you’ve done in the last year and pull it up. Not to cringe-listen to yourself (please don’t do that 😅). Just look at it with fresh eyes and ask yourself:

What was the actual takeaway I wanted the right person to have?

If someone loved this conversation, what were they supposed to do next? Would that next step have felt obvious to them… or would they have had to go digging? 🙈

If those questions feel hard to answer—or if you realize your “next step” was basically “I don’t know, come find me somewhere on the internet”—that’s your sign that phase one is where you start

That’s why so many established business owners feel burned by podcast guesting. They did what everyone said to do: pitch, show up, give value, mention your freebie, hope for the best 🤞 But nobody gave them podcast guesting strategies that were designed to actually create momentum (and sales)

Once you have the right strategies, podcast guesting can feel the way it’s supposed to feel: like a sustainable visibility strategy that builds trust, relationships, and leads—without requiring you to post nonstop or chase the algorithm 🫶
